Could September be the new January?

As August comes to a close, September often feels like a fresh start, much like January. The kids are going back to school, co-workers are returning from holiday and new projects will be starting at work.

For those who spent their summer days reflecting on changes they'd like to make, September could offer the ideal opportunity to turn those thoughts into actions. It could be a time for setting personal goals and focusing on self-improvement, without the pressure that typically comes with New Year’s resolutions.

In September…

…there's no one asking, "What are your resolutions?" Instead, it's a month where you can make changes at your own pace, under the radar. September becomes a month of small, intentional steps—an approach that can be as subtle as it is effective.

This gentle, quiet approach to change can be much more powerful than dramatic resolutions. By the time October, November, and December roll around, you may find yourself calmer, happier, and better equipped to handle whatever the holiday season brings. Instead of merely coasting into Christmas, watching the months pass by, as the nights draw in, September can be a time of personal growth and renewal. Autumn, with its reflective nature, is the perfect season to take stock of where you are, rest, and focus inward.

Some thoughts to ponder…

Seasonal Transitions and Mental Health: Research has shown that seasonal transitions, particularly from summer to autumn, can significantly impact our mental health and well-being. September, as the gateway to autumn, often brings a natural pause, allowing for reflection and the setting of new intentions, similar to the start of a new year.

Goal Setting and Behavioural Change: Studies on goal setting indicate that smaller, incremental changes are more likely to be sustained over time compared to large, dramatic shifts. September offers the perfect opportunity for such gradual improvements, aligning with the concept of "Small Steps September" .

The Importance of Quiet Reflection: The idea of taking stock during autumn aligns with psychological theories on the importance of quiet reflection and self-assessment. This period can help individuals approach the final quarter of the year with greater clarity and purpose .

Here’s to making the most of September.
